About Sherrill, Texas
Sherrill, Texas was founded in 1832 by Beatrice and Zachary Sherrill from Irmo, South Carolina. They set out west to establish a homestead and stopped atop an abutment when both of the horses pulling their wagon suddenly died at exactly the same time. In the midst of such obvious tragedy, they were struck by they beauty of the valley below and with no choice but to stay where they were, decided to settle the town right then and there. This abutment was later named Pulley Mound after the local singer who would climb up to the top of the mound and sing out local classical soprano folk songs on nights with a full moon -- always after a stop at the Newsom Saloon. Through the intervening years, people have settled in the town after experiencing its small town charm, and of course after receiving the approval of the Outsider Registration Committee. Known as the "Topaz Loop in the Bible Belt", Sherrill has been recognized by the Texas State City and Town Approvement Society as both a "great place to live" AND "a lovely place to visit." With the recent addition of the Commodore Perry Performing Arts Center and Museum, the 13 local artists are bustling with creativity which the citizens hope will spark the interest of the Approvement Society again. Also recently, the Commodore and Gwendolyn Perry Estate, atop Pulley Mound, was renamed Gracious Oaks in honor of the local flora... and Miss Gwendolyn’s predilection for naming things that reflect herself and sense of humanity.
